New water tank The whole place was clean neat and tidy Click on any picture to enlarge As part of our 3 days spent on the Chobe River we left Botswana for a morning and paid a visit to Impalila Island in Namibia (4 border control stops - there and back).  We walked-in to a traditional village in normal use centred around an enormous Boab Tree which must be many hundreds of years old - the stories it could have told!  Most (but not all) homes had a “brush walled” garden. Red Carpet landing to Botswana Border Control Namibia Border Checkin (Impalila Island) Walking in to Local villiage The villiage is centered around an ancient Boab Tree The local goat herd was out grazing for the day but their thorn fenced night compound lay on the village outskirts.  A new water supply constructed with funds donated from the local tourist lodges, pumped water from the river to a central tank - this was to address the issue of children, sent to fetch water from the river being taken by Crocodiles. The most powerful person in the community was the local “Witchdoctor” who ministers to all needs - spiritual, medical, pharmaceutical, psychological, social - the belief in his powers is deep and widespread - most will do nothing without his approval - which comes at a price!  His house in the village (the only one of this type) reflects his status. Not all houses had walled gardens Witchdoctor's house - the job pays well ... The stories this tree could tell! The local wives display their wares for sale The children enjoyed our visit - posed for photographs etc. Taking the Tourist “Dollar”
