Johannesburg is the industrial, mining and power generation centre of South Africa -
there are many large coal mines. Pretoria the Administrative Capital is about 1 hours
drive from Johannesburg. Shown is a general view of the city from the road just below
the Capital Administration Building and a “composite view of the “Administration”
building - a very hard building to photograph.
We made our base, on two
occasions in Johannesburg, at
Irene Country Lodge - the family
farm home of General Jan Smuts
(long serving Prime Minister of the
Union of South Africa). From
Johannesburg we took a day trip
to Pretoria the Administrative
Capital.
Pretoria - The Voortrekker Monument is a moving memorial to the European settlers who
treked inland between 1835 and 1854 to settle in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State
to avoid British rule. Inside the monument the dramatic frieze tells a story of courage,
endurance, trust, betrayal, retribution and eventual triumph. Only a small part of the frieze
is shown below.
Pretoria - We visited the grave
of Peter Handcock and Breaker
Morant and were given a local
update on the current
application for a Royal Pardon
