Click on any picture to enlarge Johannesburg is the industrial, mining and power generation centre of South Africa - there are many large coal mines. Pretoria the Administrative Capital is about 1 hours drive from Johannesburg.  Shown is a general view of the city from the road just below the Capital Administration Building and a “composite view of the “Administration” building - a very hard building to photograph. We made our base, on two occasions in Johannesburg, at Irene Country Lodge - the family farm home of General Jan Smuts (long serving Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa).  From Johannesburg we took a day trip to Pretoria the Administrative Capital. Pretoria - The Voortrekker Monument is a moving memorial to the European settlers who treked inland between 1835 and 1854 to settle in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State to avoid British rule.  Inside the monument the dramatic frieze tells a story of courage, endurance, trust, betrayal, retribution and eventual triumph.  Only a small part of the frieze is shown below. 17Feb1838 - 10,000 Zulu attack laagers - Theresa Viglione rides to warn and saves many lives Trust and treaty and betrayal!
