The countries we visited were all in a state of change. South Aftica threw open her borders on the
collapse of apartheid and the government can only guess at the population. Aids is endemic in
some areas (up to 50% of population). China is investing heavily in resource rich areas, as are
other nations including Australia. We saw very few white people on the streets - whites find it hard
to get jobs
The Zimbabwe currency became a joke and was eventually suspended in favour
of the US Dollar. There seems to be a lot of over employment, particularly in
Government Jobs. There is a lot of cottage industry and commendable enterprise
amongst some of the black people (often women). There are a large number of
men who just sit under trees!
Most black Africans have no idea where Australia is. A young girl
waiting on our table was amazed to learn we only spoke one
language - she spoke seven!
Almost all black Africans we met had the most beautiful white healthy
teeth.
